Our Work

River Communities Coalition (RCC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to improve quality of life in Needles, CA by addressing critical gaps in food access, basic needs, and community support. While rooted in Needles, RCC also serves the surrounding Colorado River Tri-State area through partnerships and locally driven initiatives that bring communities together to create lasting solutions.

Our Programs

River Communities Coalition operates three core programs focused on improving quality of life in Needles, CA by addressing food access, supporting basic needs, and strengthening community connections. These programs work together to address immediate needs while building long-term solutions for the community.

Food Access Initiative

The Food Access Initiative addresses the lack of local grocery options in Needles, CA—a recognized food desert. Residents often travel long distances across state lines to access fresh and affordable food, creating barriers for seniors, families, and individuals with limited transportation.

RCC is actively working to develop a community-supported grocery store to restore local access to healthy food, reduce travel burdens, and strengthen the local economy.

Community Assistance Program

The Community Assistance Program provides direct support to residents facing financial hardship, including help with utility bills, access to essential medical equipment, and other urgent needs that impact health and stability.

This program focuses on supporting seniors, individuals with disabilities, and low-income households, helping them maintain safe living conditions and avoid crisis situations.

Community Outreach & Engagement

RCC engages the community through outreach, education, and local events that bring residents together and build awareness of critical needs. These efforts connect individuals to resources while encouraging volunteerism and local involvement.

Community Engagement

The River Communities Coalition works with residents and local organizations to support community activities that bring people together and strengthen local connections. RCC has partnered with groups such as the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department during community events like Trunk-or-Treat, supported local gatherings including chili cook-offs, and participated in city clean-up efforts that help keep Needles and surrounding river communities vibrant and welcoming.

RCC has also collaborated with organizations such as the Colorado River Medical Center Foundation, the Foundation for Hospital Art, and the local Artist Guild on community activities including the cakewalk and ice cream social. These partnerships help strengthen relationships across the community while creating opportunities for residents to come together.

For the past two years, the River Communities Coalition has partnered with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department to support their annual Trunk-or-Treat event. The event provides a safe and welcoming Halloween celebration where hundreds of local children and families participate in a festive candy run while enjoying a fun and secure community environment.

The River Communities Coalition hosted a community chili cook-off that brought residents together for a day of food, music, and local celebration. The event featured chili competitors, food trucks, local vendors, live music, and a car show. Events like this help strengthen community connections while providing opportunities for local businesses, volunteers, and residents to come together in a fun and welcoming environment.

The River Communities Coalition partnered with the City of Needles, the Mohave Valley Artist Guild, and the Foundation for Hospital Art to help host a community celebration for Spike’s Birthday. The event brought families together for a day of art and community activities, including a mural painting project for children led by members of the Artist Guild. RCC also organized a cakewalk and ice cream social, creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere for residents while highlighting the importance of arts and community collaboration. Representatives from the State Assembly office also attended, helping recognize the value of community partnerships in strengthening the region.

The River Communities Coalition has participated in community clean-up efforts in partnership with local leadership, community volunteers, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. These clean-up days bring residents together to help care for shared public spaces, strengthen community pride, and demonstrate the power of local collaboration in keeping Needles and the surrounding river communities welcoming and vibrant.

During the community Christmas Fun Fair, the River Communities Coalition participated in several activities that supported local organizations and community engagement. RCC helped create and donate decorated trees for a silent auction benefiting Palo Verde College. The coalition also hosted a booth during the festival to connect with residents and gather community support for the River Communities Grocery Cooperative initiative. As part of the day’s celebration, RCC members also participated in the parade by assisting with the Grand Marshal presentation featuring the community mascot, Spike.
